How To Choose A Profitable Niche For Your Blog [An Easy Step by Step Guide]
Choosing a Blog niche is one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever make, right after “Should we have a baby?” and “Should we get a cat or a dog?”
In all seriousness though, starting a blog is a piece of cake. But choosing the niche to blog in can be a little bit of a head-scratcher.
You probably have a million ideas in your head. You’re super excited and want to start typing away to glory. But you don’t know how to go about it or what blog topic to pursue.
Well, I’m here to tell you otherwise.
Now if you don’t have a blog or are thinking of starting one, I have a step-by-step guide here on starting a money-making blog that will help!
It’s great that you are thinking to start your blog in 2020. The first thing that pops into your head is what to write about in the niche. You might get tempted to write just on what you love, but there is more to it.
There is also a usual temptation to write on multiple topics in your first blog website. Also, the confusion is what niche to choose – something you really enjoy writing, something you love, or something that can be profitable.
First of all, it is important to understand that there are indeed three different categories as mentioned above.
So if you stick to just one, there are chances for getting fail in blogging. You need to strike a balance between these three different categories. You need to find the niche which you enjoy writing, something you love and that is profitable too.
Well, too confusing, right? No issue, because we got you covered.
Here is a detailed explanation of how you can choose a profitable niche for starting a new blog in 2020.
What exactly is a Blog Niche?
A blog niche is a specific topic you’ll write (or create other types of content) about on your blog.
Now, the problem is everyone has a different idea of what a “specific” topic is.
One of the first blogs I worked on was a video game blog. We worked on it heavily for a few years and struggled to grow it.
Here’s where we messed up:
We were trying to create content for everyone who was interested in gaming. Just like thousands of other publications, bloggers, and YouTubers.
Why you need a Blog Niche at all?
You can make a blog putting everything you love on one plate. But it doesn’t really gain credibility in the eye of the readers.
Because there will be no target audience to address.
You would want to get information from a credible source to resolve your issue. And that credibility comes from the authority for expertise on a specific topic.
When starting a new blog, I like to keep the blog name fairly broad so I have the freedom to expand my target audience without rebranding (checkout our posts on choosing a domain name and blog name if you need help).
Yeah, rebranding would be a pain!
You don’t have to do this, but, I wanted to mention it because a lot of people don’t consider this until after they launch.
Basically, there are only 3 questions you need to ask yourself when choosing a blog niche.
1. Are you solving a problem that is faced worldwide?
2. Can you monetize this blog niche?
3. Have others successfully monetized this blog niche? and you must ensure that you have already analyzed your competition.
How to choose your Blog Niche?
Where does that niche come from?
At this point in the process, you just need to brainstorm. Yeah, you do want to validate your ideas eventually, but let’s leave that for the next section.
For right now, don’t worry too much about feasibility and just come up with a big list of topics you think you might want to blog about.
Beyond just staring at a white wall and running through ideas in your brain, some good ways to come up with ideas are:
- Your room/house. Just look at the objects you own and see if any of them spark an idea.
- Your daily life. Same idea – think about what you do on a daily basis and see if anything pops out.
- Blogs you read.
- Magazine articles.
- Amazon, eBay, and other shopping sites (look at the popular products, categories, or your order history).
Try honestly answering these three questions…
Question 1: Will I love writing about this one year and 50+ posts from now?
Question 2: Are there other people who want to read about this topic?
Question 3: Can I make money from this niche?
Now it’s time to validate the list you brainstormed
Now, you hopefully have at least a few ideas of what you want to write about.
Next, you need to validate those ideas to find the best one for your blog.
Finding your perfect niche is a balancing act between three different factors:
- How passionate you are about the topic
- How passionate other people are about the topic
- Whether or not you can make money from the topic
How To Check If Your Niche is Profitable Or Not?
Figure Out The Search Volume
The aim is here to find out how many people are actually searching what you want to write on. So brainstorm 10 keywords related to the niches you have selected. If you want to use a free tool, use keyword planner or SEMrush, or any paid keyword research tool, find the search volume.
Calculate the total search volume of these 10 keywords, and if they are above 15000 per month, there’s a more likely chance to monetize your blog with this niche. These keywords are basically your primary set of keywords to draw the minimum traffic to your blog.
Check The Popularity Of Niche Topics
You might have already narrowed yourself down to 2 to 4 niches or even fewer than that. Now, just check the popularity of these keywords. You can analyze and find out whether the trends for your niche are rising or declining over the last 2-3 years.
Search Your Keywords On Google
You need to run through the keywords on Google search. Enter the keywords related to the niches, and see if you can see any sponsored Adword search results. If you see, then that’s great. That simply means you can also make money from Google AdSense or other such pay-per-click platforms as well.
3-Step Niche Validation Process
Step 1: Checking Size Of Your Niche
Step 2: Exploring the Competition
Step 3: Finding Monetization Potential

Ways to monetize your Blog
Look at popular products on Amazon
Amazon is a gold mine for monetization ideas.
Basically, you want to see if there are products on Amazon that your readers might be interested in. If you find products on Amazon that sell well, you can either:
- Create similar products for your own blog (if it’s something like an eBook).
- Write blog posts to promote high-quality products and get paid a commission (for physical products).
Check for big affiliate programs
Affiliate marketing is a partnership where you get paid a commission for referring people to products. Shareasale is one popular affiliate marketing platform, but you also might have niche-specific opportunities that can provide a great income.
To try and find them, look up popular products or stores in your niche. Then, Google something like “Store name + affiliate program”.
If all goes well, you should be able to find some high-quality products you can promote and make an income.
See if there’s a way to make your own product
This method requires the most upfront work, but it can really pay off if you do it right and have a large audience.
Basically, you create your own digital product – like an eBook or an online course. Then, you sell that product to your audience.
If there’s any way you can add value – either by teaching or just compiling resources – this can be a great way to monetize a niche.

Whatever niche you choose, make sure that there are plenty of monetization opportunities. Also, do lots of research to find out if it’s a profitable niche.
Once you’re done with both, come up with at least 5-10 Blog Categories that your reader must become an expert in, to master the blog topic.
Now that you have a good idea on choosing blog niches that make money, let me know what niche you’re going to choose or have already chosen! I’d love to know.
Start with looking for it in Google Search, finding the search volume. Choose keywords with low competition. Explore the competition in your niche. Monitor how they are monetizing their blogs.
The aim is to find the best niche for your blog that you can continue putting out great content consistently. Also, validating your selected niche in the three-step process mentioned above is also essential.
