Government Introduces PAN 2.0: A Step Toward Enhanced Security with QR Codes
The Government of India has announced the introduction of PAN 2.0, an upgraded version of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) featuring enhanced security and the inclusion of a QR code. Although QR codes on PAN cards were initially introduced in 2017-18, many users still possess older cards without this feature.
As the official rollout of PAN 2.0 approaches, individuals can now upgrade to a PAN 1.0 card with a QR code. Here’s how to do it.
Why Does the QR Code Matter?
According to the Ministry of Finance, the QR code on a PAN card simplifies the authentication process. Using a dedicated QR code scanner, authorities can verify essential details such as the PAN holder’s photo, signature, name, parent’s name, and date of birth.
It is important to note that existing PAN cards without QR codes will remain valid. Upgrading to a QR-coded PAN is optional and recommended only for those who require it.
How to Apply for a PAN with a QR Code
To apply for a PAN 1.0 card with a QR code, applicants will need their PAN details, phone number, and the email ID linked to the specific PAN. Depending on the original application source, individuals must apply through either NSDL or UTIITSL.
Applicants can choose between two options:
- ePAN with QR Code: delivered in a password-protected PDF format.
- Physical PAN with QR Code: A hard copy of the PAN card featuring the QR code.
If the PAN was issued within the last month, downloading an ePAN with a QR code is free. For older PANs, users must pay₹8.26 for an ePAN or₹50 for a physical card.
Finding Your Application Source
If unsure about where the original PAN application was processed, users can visit either the NSDL or UTIITSL website. By entering basic details, the website will redirect them to the appropriate platform where they can apply for an ePAN or a physical PAN with a QR code.
The introduction of PAN 2.0 with its upgraded security features represents a significant step forward in strengthening identity verification processes while offering users an option to enhance their existing PAN cards.
